Historically black newspaper from Ben Carson's hometown: He's just a 'House Negro'

Liberals show you who they really are when they think the environment will permit it. The Michigan Chronicle is a historically black Detroit-based newspaper that has not always been down-the-line pro-Democrat. But I guess there are certain things you have to believe if you're going to qualify as authentically black these days, and one the most accomplished black men ever to grow up in the city of Detroit appears to no longer qualify:

Being appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and being a House Negro are two different things. It now appears HUD Secretary Ben Carson is imminently qualified to be a House Negro, but remains as unqualified as ever to lead HUD.

Yesterday, in the wake of Trump’s unhinged response to the Charlottesville travesty last weekend where large numbers of Neo-Nazis and other white supremacists violently flexed their muscles freely for all to see, Carson suggested that critics of Trump’s response were getting poor little 45 all wrong, that we were blowing it all out of proportion. But let me not paraphrase; this is exactly what he said (courtesy of the Washington Post): (snipped Carson quote about Trump) So Carson, the only African American member of Trump’s cabinet (Omarosa, the other resident House Negro, is a White House advisor), believes that having a President of the United States who can’t make up his mind whether or not to endorse or condemn Neo-Nazis and other white supremacists on the march in the streets of Charlottesville, is a minor incident…. What..? I dunno. Maybe he got his months mixed up and he thought they were out for trick or treat? I wasn’t the only one who called this man out early on during the 2016 campaign when his comments made it clear Carson had become nothing more than a court jester. A sad joke who forfeited the well-earned status of a brilliant medical career to join the circus as a second rate clown. And oh, did some folks get mad. Thought it was wrong to treat Dr. Carson in such a disrespectful way? Didn’t I know who he was? Didn’t I know how he rose himself up from poverty in Detroit?

Yeah. I knew. That’s why I was so damned pissed. And remain so. And Carson’s response to Trump is all the validation any Carson critic will ever need. Because if this doesn’t show you who he is, then you may as well step on your glasses and grind them into the ground because you’re blind as a bat.

The Chronicle has actually endorsed Republicans for Michigan governor twice. That doesn't make them a conservative paper - they're not - but it does show they're not strictly a left-wing propaganda paper. Their perspective is clearly black and urban, and they take whatever position they think is best for that community. Sometimes they push back against the party that takes them for granted and doesn't really give them much of value in return. That's simply to let you know the lay of the land, so you can understand this rant in historical context. The Chronicle is as sold as anyone on the fiction that Trump is a blatant racist who refuses to denounce the KKK. And if truth be told, the black establishment has hated Carson ever since he embarrassed Obama during the National Prayer Breakfast.

Carson's decision to accept the HUD post presented quite the quandary, because on the one hand you've got a black man ascending to a cabinet position - and one of particular importance to the urban black community. On top of his accomplishments as a neurosurgeon, how do you run down a man who has become everything you claim you want to see black people become? On the other hand, he's on Team Trump, and even endorsed Trump once his own candidacy ended. Now that Carson refuses to play along with the Trump-as-racist narrative established by the media, Owens had had enough. He went into full destructo mode on Carson. House Negro is about as nasty an insult as one black person can drop on another, probably even a rung below Uncle Tom, because it suggests that you facilitate the evil agenda of The Man in return for whatever morsels he's willing to dole out to you. Carson has never needed to do any such thing. He could pretty much do anything he wants to do and he surely doesn't need the money - not that working for the government pays you even a fraction of what Carson could make in the private sector. He cares about the nation and wants to serve, and doesn't view the president of the United States the same way his worst enemies do - maybe because he actually knows the man. Also, Carson thinks for himself, kind of like our boss. If that gets you labeled "House Negro" in today's black community, that's a very sick community indeed.
