An unelected, ill-conceived and potentially disastrous coalition

How did it happen and what now?

As the magnitude of the current crisis in Ottawa continues to sink in with Canadians two main questions must be answered. How is it that a democratically elected Prime Minister and government given a significant increase in seats (127 to 143) less than two months after being voted in by the people could be replaced with an unelected, ill-conceived and potentially disastrous coalition headed up by Stephen Dion the man rejected by the Canadian people, his own province and his own party? Astonishing is far to weak a word to describe this development.

The second obvious question is what happens now? The Governor-General has the enormous responsibility of doing the right thing for the country. This is the time for partisan politics and unworthy motives to be cast aside. It is the time for a clear mind and and honest heart. It is the time to think about the future of this great nation and our children. May I be forgiven for failing to see this as a complicated or difficult decision Clearly the right thing to do is prove you are a true believer in democracy and reject a coalition based entirely on selfish ambitions, greed and a lust for power and that will only enhance the considerable fears and concerns Canadians are already suffering. Canadians know what is right. Let us hope and pray Governor-General Michaëlle Jean does. Gerald Hall Nanoose Bay, B.C.
