It seems that the main obstacle to the widespread adoption of nuclear energy is the potential danger of nuclear waste which, currently, there is no way to dispose of safely.

Why couldn't nuclear waste be solidified, wrapped in layers of plastic, aluminum, lead and concrete, then stored in a stone mountain until a safe method of disposal is developed, or even a cost-effective way to rocket it to towards the sun. Long before it reached the sun, the waste would be vaporized as harmlessly as throwing a spoonful of salt into the Ocean. William Bedford
