How long do we want to go on empowering corruption? Is it time to say “enough is enough”?

If I Were to Steal an Election ...

If I Were to Steal an Election ...
We are within days of states certifying the midterm results. One significant race is still up in the air. Republicans seem resigned to the loss of the Red Wave, doing as Republicans so often do – blaming ourselves for somehow failing to do what we should have done to win. Actually, the only thing we failed to do was to fix our election systems when we had the time and support. We knew that mail-in voting was a recipe for fraud, and that our dirty voter rolls invited abuse. We knew that the weaknesses in voter identification, chains of custody, and other areas had been exploited before, yet we somehow thought this time would be different. The definition of insanity….

Stealing an Election

So here we are, ready to certify that every vote was counted, even those that shouldn’t be. Oh, people console themselves that while fraud is real, it only occurs rarely and can’t affect a large scale election. Our own government has told us that repeatedly, and they never lie, do they? Now we get to ask the question: Is it possible to generate enough fraudulent votes to actually determine the outcomes of elections in multiple states, and to do so with little risk of getting caught? The simple answer is yes. Not only is there at least one method that can be used, but it appears to have been applied in at least the last two national elections, and probably for several more prior ones. And yes, it is very difficult to detect, yet it can inject tens and even hundreds of thousands of ballots into an election. First, though, let us look at strategy and tactics involved in election manipulation. If I were to steal an election, I wouldn’t be greedy about it. I would let my opposition win a few races just to allay suspicions. If I won every race, that would raise considerable questions about the validity of the elections. By restricting myself to a few key races, I could counter claims of interference by pointing to the races I “lost”. Most people want to believe that our elections are fair and honest, and are willing to see a few races won and lost as evidence that the election process worked as it was supposed to. That will to believe works in my favor when I’m willing to give up a few races to win the ones that matter. The next question is how to make sure I win the races I want. I would want a method that would be very difficult to detect its operation, would be capable of injecting lots of votes into the counting process, and if it was noticed, there would be little or no way to trace it back to me. Election fraud has been going on probably as long as there have been elections, but most of the traditional methods fail one or more of the criteria I outlined. There is one, though, that stands out as nearly perfect, so long as I am patient.

With a little help from my friends

This is a relatively new method, arising from a combination of new and old approaches. It has been made many times more powerful by changes to voting systems and especially to widespread use of mail-in voting. I have written of this before, so I will not go into detail here, but will summarize. Voter rolls across the country contain large numbers of fictional voters, in many states, as many as ten percent or more of the rolls. How they got there is material for another article, but these fictional entries serve as a pool of “voters” I can use to create ballots for my choices. If I were the one who planted them, I have all the information needed to prepare ballots that look just like legitimate ones, including signature images I can print on a return envelope that match the ones in the state rolls. The state will send me real ballot forms to addresses I provide so I can mark them as I choose. When I return them, the state will see that the “voter” is in the voter rolls and has a perfectly matching signature, so it will be accepted into the system for counting just as though it came from a real, legal voter. If there is a question of validity, the only information available is the name and return address on the ballot envelope, which, of course, isn’t mine. With very little time and effort, I can create tens of thousands of ballots, each one tied to a fictional voter in the rolls, and all voting for my choices. I can return the ballots in state provided drop boxes, or even return them by mail. Yes, each one is a felony, but how can they catch me? Once the ballots are separated from their envelopes they are mixed in with all the others so there is no way to tell them apart from the legitimate ones. A perfect system. Or is it?

Not so perfect after all

This method appears to be the perfect method for election manipulation – it is nearly impossible to detect, can produce enough votes to swing almost any election, and even if detected is almost impossible to trace back to its source. What’s not to like about it? As it turns out, there are ways to deal with this method and others like it. Small groups around the country have been working to detect and identify various pieces of the puzzle. It has been time consuming and quite challenging, but good progress has been made. I have been working with a small group in California that is putting evidence together to show not only is the method possible, but it has been used extensively, and it has rendered the results of at least the last three major elections indeterminate. I won’t go into detail here, but we are working on the final steps needed to build a solid case of large scale election manipulation, including identification of perpetrators.

Back to the future

Now we come back to the midterms. Republicans did not take a majority in the Senate, and may yet lose an even split there. Were I stealing an election, I would call that a win. Although the House gained a small Republican majority, I would see that as a perfect smokescreen to hide my steal. Democrats tend to vote in tight lockstep on issues, with any dissent strongly discouraged. On the other hand, getting Republicans to agree on almost anything is like herding cats. On almost any issue there will be a few who will agree with Democrats, or at least, disagree with fellow Republicans. It is a safe bet that even with a small Republican majority enough will support Democrat positions to ensure the Democrat favored issues pass. That is a double win for me, if I were stealing the election for the Democrats. Unless something happens, we have another two years of a Democrat presidency, with effectively a Democrat congress. Looking at all the damage done in the last two years, what can we expect in the next two? Will we expand the Supreme Court? How about outlawing all semi-automatic weapons? Perhaps we would require universal compulsory Covid vaccinations? What about outlawing use of natural gas for home heating, cooking, and electricity generation? Anyone up for a climate lockdown? We are only limited by our imagination. All this and more could be done through “bipartisan” legislation.

Lost in the swamp

Thus we return to certification of our midterms. Those who would steal our freedoms are becoming more blatant in their efforts. We only need to look at what is happening in Arizona for confirmation. We need to become much more questioning of our elections, much more demanding of transparency and of measures that eliminate the massive opportunities for fraud that presently exist. Especially, we need to step back and look at the recent elections to see if they really reflect the will of the people or are instead reflective of the will of those who wish to retain and increase their power. We saw the fraud and its consequences in 2020, but didn’t fix things then, believing that we could wait until 2022. Now we see what 2022 has brought, but look forward to 2024 when we can really fix things. How long do we want to go on empowering corruption? Is it time to say “enough is enough”? We must expect opposition. As we have already seen in other contexts, the powers of the law and the state will be brought to bear against those who seek truth. It has never been an easy struggle, this conflict between those who seek power and those who desire freedom. We only need look at history, and at those nations who lost that fight to see what consequences might face us should we not prevail.
