A good speech isn't going to change the fact that Michael Ignatieff and Bob Rae are Canada's political "Odd Couple."
Ignatieff's problem, apart from making Stephen Harper look positively charismatic, is that he's seen as an outsider, more in tune with the U.S. than with Canada. As for Rae, he says that the NDP knows how to divide the pie, but not how to bake it. That's what his opponents have been saying about the NDP all along. And it took Rae about 30 years to find out his colleagues couldn't cook. Unless Ignatieff can connect with ordinary Canadians, and soon, the Liberals' only chance of garnering a majority will be to replace him with someone, like Frank McKenna, who can.
