Apple’s iPad could cut into print news subscriptions

iPads Threaten Newspapers

A new survey shows that Apple’s iPad could cut into print news subscriptions.

From The Guardian
Research in the United States suggests that although print newspapers may have success in attracting readers to tablets there is an unhappy trade-off. According to a Missouri School of Journalism survey of 1,609 iPad owners, 58.1% who subscribe to a daily paper and who use their iPad at least an hour a day to read news said they were very likely to cancel their print subscriptions within six months.
With more than 8 million of the devices having been sold and the now widespread availability of the iPad in retail stores they are a small but growing threat to newspaper print subscriptions in the long run. That number isn’t enough to kill print newspapers but any decline at this stage isn’t good news especially if the readers are fleeing to free digital editions that are still widely available.
