Khamenei: We innocent Iranians just can't trust the U.S.

Khamenei: We innocent Iranians just can't trust the U.SI think we've already established how insane it is for the Obama Administration to think they can seriously negotiate a deal that will keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons. In fact, it's so insane that even they don't really believe it. But it's quite a sight when you behold Iran already laying the groundwork for violating the agreement no sane person believes they can be trusted to keep in the first place.

The Wall Street Journal reports:
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Thursday that the U.S. and other arrogant powers couldn’t be trusted, as the deadline approaches for a nuclear deal that could result in the easing of international sanctions against Iran. “We see how it is impossible to trust the promises of the arrogants,” he said, “and how we can’t rely on words said in private meetings.” Mr. Khamenei, who has the final say over most matters of state in Iran, made the comments in a speech marking the anniversary of the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the driving force behind the country’s Islamic revolution in 1979. On Thursday, he said the guidance of Mr. Khomeini, who preceded him as Iran’s supreme leader, showed that global powers “should not be trusted at all.”
You can pretty much write this script, can't you? Someone in the west, maybe a future U.S. administration that's actually serious, accuses Iran of a violation. Iran responds: Aha, see? We told you they couldn't be trusted! What follows is a fruitless U.S. attempt to gain international support for some sort of sanctions against Iran. One of the reasons this goes nowhere is that someone pulls the old Bush-lied-about-WMDs trope out of the attack, claiming that the U.S. has a long history of lying about regimes having weapons and this is no different than that (especially if a Republican is in the White House), and despite the fact that we're sure Iran is in violation of the agreement, we can get no support from anyone for doing anything about it. Remember, the terms of the Gulf War cease fire agreement said Saddam had to prove he had destroyed his weapons. It didn't say we had to find them. But it didn't matter. The fact that he was clearly in violation of the deal became irrelevant, and we were accused of making the whole thing up - with our own Democratic Party playing the lead role in the building of the narrative. Iran will play the same game, and they'll get away with it. They're laying the groundwork even now. And Barack Obama and John Kerry are foolish and quixotic enough to just keep right on playing because they are so desperate to get this deal.
