'Labels are divisive, but colour me purple'

Labels

Re "Labels are divisive, but colour me purple." (John Snobelen, July 5): It's hard to disagree with most of what John Snobelen had to say about sticking labels on people. But even allowing for all the complexities that make each and everyone of us both similar and unique at the same time, some labels are still relevant.

In every organization, whether religious or political, you will find those who are basically conservative, liberal or nominal. It's the political and religious ideologues (and they proudly flaunt their labels) on the left and the right who draw lines in the sand and brook no compromise. The never ending battle between the forces of reason and the Neo-Luddites can be viewed in all their self-righteous passion in the daily press and on the various TV news-channels.
