Displaying an extraordinarily good sense of timing, North Korea launched a missile Saturday night to coincide with President Barack Obama’s lecture about eliminating nuclear weapons from the face of the planet. The missile event was also a birthday tribute to Kim Jong Il’s late father. There is talk that Lil Kim himself may make a public appearance soon, his first since August.
This latest mischief has no real downside for ruthless tyrant, Lil Kim. He has been cavalierly ignoring UN resolutions for years. Listening to Obama’s endless palaver about how the United States should lead by example, not by force, during his second European Obamapalooza tour sent the message that this administration can be played. Pyongyang and Lil Kim must be all agog at their good fortune: a new President who shares their dislike for America and a State Department run by Hillary Clinton! North Korea had enormous success with her husband and surely anticipates acquiring more appeasement largesse.
Rich Lowry’s 2003 book about former president Bill Clinton, Legacy, reminds us of the calamitous 1994 Agreed Framework negotiated by the former President Clinton. Amid much Clinton crowing about the magnitude of the achievement, the United States ended up hoodwinked into giving North Korea 500,000 tons of heavy fuel oil a year and two light water nuclear reactors.
Predictably, North Korea went right back to working on their nuclear enrichment program. The regime has been working on nukes since the 1950s and has ignored all sanctions and agreements ever forged. So how could Clinton have known they were being duplicitous?
In 1997, Lil Kim’s nuclear hi-jinks became obvious. The Clinton administration denied that North Korea had resumed its nuclear program and continued gloating about the stunning success of the Agreed Framework. Clinton sent food aid to North Korea, whereupon Lil Kim starved his own people.
As Andrei Landov points out in the WSJ, North Korea has little ability to support itself financially, thus, selling nukes to rouge nations is an important cash crop. As is extorting financial assistance from the United States. With assistance from China, North Korea is selling equipment and technology to Iran, Syria and Pakistan. Saturday’s launch has been widely regarded as a product demo, calculated to boost sales to bad actors who want to destroy the United States and Israel.
One more perk: Pyongyang got our new president’s attention. The regime has been sanctioned before; John Bolton told Fox News that North Korea was already in violation of four resolutions with no consequences. Barack Obama has called for “punishment”, which in Obamaspeak means running to the UN hoping for a tersely worded resolution.
Authenticating yet again how tone deaf Barack Obama is to the American people, a Rasmussen poll taken April 3rd and 4th shows 57% of the respondents favored a military response if North Korea were to follow through on its plans to fire a missile. Just 28% of the respondents were not sure, or presumably, thought North Korea was getting satellite TV.
The UN wasted no time denying the administration’s request for a resolution condemning North Korea. Obama keeps changing his mind about missile defense; he offered to trade away the proposed missile shield in Eastern Europe in exchange for Russia’s pinky swear promise to stop helping Iran arm itself. Medved rejected this overture. Obama’s shrewd maneuver boosted Russian leadership’s insolence and delighted the left. Liberals were perpetually apoplectic when Ronald Reagan had nukes; Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad having nuclear weapons is reasonable, in the mind of the liberal.
Like Clinton, Barack Obama plans to gut the defense budget. The left’s theory is that if we spend money on defense, most especially missile shields, we send the message to our enemies that we don’t trust them.
The current Oval Office Occupant has shown no inclination to do anything other than perpetually jawbone. He learned a dislike and distrust for America early in life and has done nothing to suggest he has any patriotic leanings. Expect Obama to take the path of least resistance. He wants to focus on wrecking the economy, not on foreign policy, as made abundantly clear by a slew of embarrassing gaffes before his third month in office. Does this administration even have an office of protocol? Or do Barack and Hillary just go to Joe Biden for advice?
The UN is cheering for the bad guys; our president is entirely lacking in the kind of intestinal fortitude necessary to deal with hostile rogue regimes. Our current secretary of state, the perennially inept Hillary Clinton, is recycled from an administration that made enormous foreign policy blunders that cost us dearly.
It feels like welcome back, Carter.
