I keep hearing about college students who have to skimp on food in order to pay their other expenses. Here are a few tips for plain dining that I picked up when I was down on my luck. You want a cheap nourishing soup? Pour a few dollops of ketchup into a bowl of boiling water and add a handful of crushed crackers.

Buy day old bread and make a sandwich with lettuce and onions.Yummy. Boil carrots and rutabaga, drain, mash, add pepper: very tasty. I've lost count of how many ways there are to cook potatoes and hamburger. All of them delicious. Mash a can of cornbeef and about a dozen potatoes together, add a small finely chopped onion, pepper and mustard, form into patties and fry til golden- brown. And don't forget the food banks, they are there for poor students as well as the homeless. And remember to donate a few bags of groceries to them from time-to-time when you become solvent. Bon appetite. William Bedford
