The US Military’s New Chicken Heart Medal for Naïve Restraint May 14th, 2010.

Meathead politicians compromising our troops

There is hardly anything new about politicians interfering with the military, but their excesses can sometimes be breathtakingly dangerous. That was my opinion when our Parliament decided to have a one-minute silence after the first Canadian soldier was killed in Afghanistan. What kind of message did that send?
“Look what happens if we kill just one of them! This is great, let’s go out and kill some more!” Now the politicians want to issue a medal to soldiers who deliberately hold their fire, in dangerous situations, in order to avoid risking civilian deaths. My military experience was very limited, but I feel quite sure than any soldier receiving such a medal will be considered a wuss by his fellows, and possibly earn their enmity for potentially risking their lives as well as his own; no-one will want to serve with him. Too bad our soldiers’ lives can be compromised on the whim of some meathead politician.
