Media pretty surprised Chavez puppet barely wins Venezuela election

Time Magazine is stunned that Nicolas Maduro, who was handpicked by Hugo Chavez to succeed him as iron-fisted dicator of Venezuela, just barely won the election designed to make his elevation official. Gosh. What could be behind the nation's lack of enthusiasm for Maduro? Could it be "rising discontent over problems ranging from crime to power blackouts"?
You don't suppose problems like these might explain why the electorate wasn't too excited about staying the Marxist course, do you? Meanwhile, challenger Henrique Capriles is - perhaps understandably - something less than magnanimous in defeat:

At Capriles’ campaign headquarters, people hung their heads quietly as the results were announced by an electoral council stacked with government loyalists. Many started crying; others just stared at TV screens in disbelief. Later, Capriles emerged to angrily reject the official totals: “It is the government that has been defeated.” He said his campaign came up with “a result that is different from the results announced today.” “The biggest loser today is you,” Capriles said, directly addressing Maduro through the camera. “The people don’t love you.”
I wonder how much worse Venezuela's economic situation would be if the U.S. government made a priority of exploiting our own energy resources instead of being so happy to buy it from the Chavistas. Maybe bad enough to get them to elect a pro-capitalist president? Oh well. We don't even have one of those here, so what am I wishing for?
