Re "Do we need a fourth election in five years?" (Sept. 5): Michael Ignatieff would be foolish to force an election at this time for a number of reasons. Apart from the fact that the country doesn't want an election at this time, there is every indication that the result would be another minority government.

The main reason, however, for Ignatieff to cool it is that the majority of Canadians don't know who he is or what he stands for. Who is Iggy, anyway? Is he pro or is he con? Is he left or is he right, or is he putting us on? By forcing an election, is dumb like an ox? Or, is he, maybe, crazy like a fox? We don't know what Iiggy is, and we don't know what he's not, but for better or for worse, he's the best the Libs. have got. And if he's half as savvy as he claims.to be, he'll force an election, not. William Bedford
