Brown University Prof. Barrett Hazeltine

More Five-Star Green Hypocrisy

If Brown University Prof. Barrett Hazeltine wants to be a green activist he really ought to avoid participating in piggish consumption.

In today's mail was a travel solicitation from the Johns Hopkins University Office of Alumni Relations for the same $64,950-per-person, 3-week-long, private jet trip around the world that embarrassed the World Wildlife Fund in 2008. Knowing that opening the brochure for the consumption orgy would be like shooting fish in a barrel, I checked out the lecturers going on the trip. While I'd never heard of Prof. Hazeltine before, a few Google searches later I learned that:

  • As recently as 2009, Hazeltine served on the executive committee of Sierra Club (Rhode Island Chapter);
  • Hazeltine recently spoke at the Brown University Environmental Change Initiative on the "Corporate Responsibility in Climate Change" panel;
  • Hazeltine believes that if "every American who drives 1000 miles a month drove 30 fewer miles the cumulative effect would be sufficient to bring carbon dioxide atmospheric levels back to their present value."
I'm sure there's more Hazeltine hypocrisy, but you get the idea. As Al Gore asked at the end of "An Inconvenient Truth, Are you ready to change the way you live? Folks like Gore and Hazeltine really mean you.
