According to the latest CNN polling, Hillary's numbers are in freefall. The data, released last night, shows a precipitous 19-point drop in the last two months. The research shows that not only is she in danger of facing a real threat from primary challengers, but that the once-inevitable candidate has a lot to fear from multiple Republicans as well. This has Chuck Todd visibly upset.Todd appeared on MSNBC's Morning Joe, where he said: "Every time you think, okay, when is she at bottom? It feels like there’s a new bottom,” A month ago when she was having bad poll numbers, when it was starting to go down, one of the things they hung their hat on is, ‘Well, as bad as her numbers may look, she’s still in better shape when matched up against any one Republican. Well, that’s not happening anymore, right? This is just pile after pile after pile.” Suddenly if her electability is in question, then that’s when the handwringing truly begins and when donors start panicking. And I think they are panicking.”Chuck Todd is, obviously, right. What was once seen as a sure thing is rapidly imploding. That's clearly going to leave a whole bunch of money men feeling like they may have backed the wrong pony. However, Todd seems surprised by this, and that strikes one as...odd. The fact is that the "inevitability" of "President Clinton" was always drastically overstated. For myriad reasons, many of which we've discussed before, Hillary was never the lock the DNC wanted to portray her as being. She was always a deeply troubled candidate. How anyone could ignore the piles of unexplainable baggage and 30 years’ worth of distasteful personal issues is baffling. If the DNC believed that Hillary's charm and winning personality could somehow overcome her problems, one has to assume they've never met the woman. The collapse was probably more "inevitable" than the candidate and that means this clip of a Clinton campaign stop is the perfect metaphor: No one is saying it's all over for Hillary but, given that she's a candidate who digs herself deeper every time she opens her mouth, the road back is going to be a long hard slog.
