I was inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt that it was probably just a bad attempt at a joke. Then he immediately tried to make it about Trump and I started feeling less generous.
Now granted, he says right in the interview that the kiss comment at the beginning is a joke, but then he does it again at the end.

It seems like an inopportune moment for Asner to attack the political right and Christians, but I guess that once you're 87, you're gonna do what you're gonna do.
Serious question, though: To joke about the issue as lightly as he does here, is Asner not demonstrating that at least old-time Hollywood still doesn't really understand what's going on here, and how serious it is?
Too bad. I absolutely love Asner as an actor. It's probably a good thing I don't know him in real life.
