New for You – Products for the Passionate Gardener

Our second look at some of the many new products that have come to our attention and might be considered worthy of your interest. Please note that none of these have paid to be mentioned, nor offered “freebies” – although aged journalism wisdom has it that if it can be eaten, drunk or smoked in one day it is not a bribe, which seems to let us out.

Lawns

The past few years have seen increasing numbers of devices to allow vehicles to drive over or park on turfed areas. GrassGrid reinforces grassed or graveled areas, allowing traffic without excessive erosion. Runoff is reduced as water flows through the surface. It is said to withstand loads up to 28 tons per square foot. ACO Systems.

Pest Control

BugFix is said to be a totally water-based, non-flammable, ready-to-use insecticide that kills a wide range of crawling and flying insects on contact. The stable formulation is residually effective, killing bugs for extended periods both indoors and outdoors. Being odourless and non-staining makes it effective for indoor use. Toxicity to warm-blooded organisms (humans, cats, dogs, etc.) is so low as not to be measurable. BugFix is made in Canada. Nortek.

Living Fences

We’re not too sure that ‘Living Fence Panels’ from Mobilane NA manufactures are quite the answer many will desire The company claims the ready-to-install living green ivy fence panels are suitable for the North American climate. Some parts of North America, yes, but a ivy (Hedera) is simply not hardy in many parts of Canada. Still for those in parts of its range where ivy is hardy, this living fence consists of a metal grid covered with ivy, planted in a biodegradable pot offer instant privacy. It is capable of sensing temperature, the presence of rainfall and the amount of solar exposure at the irrigation system site itself, the sensor will wirelessly send the data to a receiver module and adjust the irrigation controller’s program accordingly. Save water by automatically watering less in cooler weather. Save time through simple, quick installation and programming and save money because wireless hookup means less labour. For details, see (link) FreeLink is a Canadian manufacturer and inventor of Wireless Sensor Systems that measure soil moisture, soil temperature, rainfall, irrigation flow and evapotranspiration, and report in real time directly to a handheld, wall-mount or computer interface.
