The City of San Diego wants its residents to conserve water by using their sprinklers less and taking shorter showers. So why is the city itself wasting millions of gallons of water every year?
As we watched a sinkhole swallow a car last week in Southcrest, we wondered just how much water San Diego sends down the drain. The answer: from October to October in the past year, almost 38 million gallons.
Arian Collins from the San Diego Water Department says the problem is old cast iron pipes that run through the city. They were supposed to last 30 years, but many are now 50.
"That's a lot of water, and you know, no one wants to lose that much water," Collins said.
