The sixth year anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom (which the Left seems to have thought was called “Operation Iraqi WMD”) is a perfect example of the dilemma Leftists face when they hold power.
When the Left is out of power, it can speak of American soldiers strafing Iraqi villages and it can complain of Bush policies which made us less safe. Who, today, in the mainstream media or in the Leftist political establishment can say the sort of outrageous things that seemed to explode almost daily when President Bush was in office?
If the American military is accused of atrocities now, the blame falls on Barack Obama and his political party. If a stable Iraq collapses into civil war today, President Obama will have to determine what to do. The military defeats of America will be his defeats, but much more importantly, the national and international perception of America being defeated will also be his defeat. The Left, at least while Obama is in office, must pretend that everything is going well in Iraq and in Afghanistan. The Left must defend how our military behaves under its new Commander-in-Chief.
For awhile, the Left can pretend that President Bush is still in office. Remember than John Kerry wrote that he served in Vietnam under Richard Nixon when actually he served under a liberal Democrat, LBJ. But this façade can only last a short time and it can only affect an Orwellian minority of the American population. Sane people grasp that Obama ran for office promising change. If he cannot change things, then he is incompetent. If he will not change things, then he is a cynical opportunist. If he does change things, and the change produces catastrophe, then he owns that disaster.
Controlling terrorism against America is suddenly a critical political concern of the Left. Do not look for national newsmagazines to publish articles about the American military flushing copies of the Koran down the toilet (the soldiers, sailors, and airmen now work for Obama.) And do not expect that government intelligence systems which give us a “heads up” on what the bad guys are planning will be exposed on the front pages of the New York Times. Not only might that risk terrorist disaster for America (a trivial concern of the New York Times) but it might knock Obama’s popularity down ten points (a true crisis of American government.)
The Left, in short, has to adopt a sort of pseudo-patriotism. American military victories in the field help Obama politically and American military losses in the field will hurt him politically. If other nations vent their hatred of America too loudly now, then Obama will stop looking like the great world leader, so whatever foreign politicians say will be smothered by the mainstream media. The pretense of Obama success in every area of foreign policy and national security will have to be maintained as long as possible, because each failure will tarnish his image.
Pure lust for power which unifies radical Islam with militant atheism today
The ripple effects may reach farther than that. The Leftist leaders of democracies have no interest in bringing down Obama either. There is a transnational party, although that party has no formal name or structure. It is, what I have called, Sinisterism: that pure lust for power which unifies radical Islam with militant atheism today and which tied Bolshevism to Nazism and Fascism seventy years ago. Obama is the leader of this party. It has a visceral hatred for America and for Israel, for serious Christianity and for serious Judaism; it unites in a single disdainful gang all the wretched debris of a wrecked modern culture.
This global gang of Sinisterism includes the venomous leaders in Iran, the thuggish leaders of the Taliban, the smug media overlords of western democracies, and the dull drones of the Democrat Party. Their common enemy is ordered liberty guides by broad Judeo-Christian principles. The last stronghold of this sane, moral power is the common will of the American people. If Americans can be made to drink the Kool-Aid of Sinisterism, then the war is won (or, in our case, the war is lost.) There would be no need to break an America whose spirit was already broken. There would be no reason to cripple an American military power which ceased trying to defend Western ideals, including, specifically, Israel. There would be no point in mocking American leaders who believed that America, Israel, Christians, and Jews were the source of evil in this world.
This leaves the Left (or, I would say, the Sinisterists) with a dilemma: if Iraq is peaceful, if allied power prevails in establishing safe democracy in Afghanistan, if Israel remains at peace, if America is not attacked by terrorists, then Obama may stay popular and powerful . The risk, for Sinisterism, is that goodness may actually begin to prevail. Democracy judges politicians by success. If Obama is to succeed, the forces of evil cannot prevail. That is the dilemma for the haters around the world who love the quiet loathing he feels for all that is good in America: they can try to injure America, but only by hurting Obama.
