OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation today called on the Trudeau government to scrap its wasteful Mission Cultural Fund (MCF) which has seen millions in taxpayer dollars spent on dubious “cultural” activities. “The Mission Cultural Fund supposedly exists for the purpose of burnishing Canada’s image around the world,” said CTF Federal Director Aaron Wudrick. “It’s hard to see how spending $51,000 to exhibit Bryan Adams’ photos at a red carpet gala in Toronto does that.”
In May 2017, the Royal Ontario Museum hosted an event featuring photos taken by Adams along with a cocktail reception with tickets for tables running from $25,000 to $50,000. The MCF provided $51,000 to the event, according to documents obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. The MCF also provided Canadian artist Peaches with an $8,800 subsidy for her 2019 art exhibit in Hamburg, Germany, entitled “Whose Jizz Is This.” It featured sculptures, prints, videos and an eclectic cast of giant sex toys called the Fleshies. “While there’s no doubt it was a stimulating exhibit, it’s hard to see how this was advancing Canada’s brand,” said Wudrick.
