President Trump says he's 'so proud' to have convinced you that the media is totally 'fake'

If there's one thing that pretty much everyone can agree on, it's that Donald Trump - both as candidate and President - has taken a savage beating in the media. Most people on the left will tell you he deserves it. Some, however, even a few of his most ardent detractors, are willing to admit that he's on the receiving end of an unfair pile-on. If there's another thing pretty much everyone can agree on, it's that an awful lot of the reporting from allegedly unbiased sources is twisted, misleading, or simply false. Whether this is because reporters are incompetent, chasing ratings, or working to support a specific narrative is irrelevant. The inarguable fact is that the "old media" has been caught lying - over and over again.

President Trump is pretty happy about that exposure, and he's taking credit for the increasing disdain with which the American people view the press. As he puts it:

"They put on stories that are so false. They have so-called "sources" that in my opinion don't exist. You know, they say 'sources have said.' They make it up. It is so dishonest. It is so fake. And you know I have come up with some pretty good names for people. I think one of the best names - you know, I've really started this whole fake news thing. Now they've turned it around, and now they're calling, you know, stories put out by Facebook fake, and they're fake. What could be more fake than CBS and NBC and ABC and CNN when you look at some of these stories? ...And people agree. If you look at the level of approval of media - of general media - if you look at it from the day I started running to now, I'm so proud that I've been able to convince people how fake it is, because it has taken a nosedive."

Trump is 100% correct here. The country's biggest and (formerly) most-respected media entities have absolutely self-immolated. Their credibility lies in tatters, ruined by decades of blatant bias.

That said, I wouldn't give Trump all the credit. There's been a cadre of conservative voices - from the talk radio giants to the lowly bloggers - who've been beating this drum for decades. Trump may be the most famous face associated with it, but in a lot of ways his election is a symptom of distrust that's been slowly growing since the 70's. People have simply had enough.
