Anyone who thinks Stephen Harper was let down by his friends in the Senate is naive, to say the least.

Harper, who blasted the Senate as undemocratic when he was Alberta Premier, changed his tune when he became prime minister and prorogued Parliament then appointed 18 senators that he was sure would back his every move. They weren't his friends, he saw them as useful lackeys. A few of them, so far, have turned out to be his political nightmare. William Bedford
