"Certainly anybody who's been held in those conditions, in captivity for five years, has paid an extraordinary price. But that is really not the point. The point is that he's back. He is going to be safely reunited with his family. He served the United States with honor and distinction."
"Sergeant Bergdahl wasn't simply a hostage; he was an American prisoner of war captured on the battlefield. We have a sacred obligation that we have upheld since the founding of our republic to do our utmost to bring back our men and women who are taken in battle, and we did that in this instance."Where to begin with the lies? First of all, Bergdahl wasn't captured in the midst of some raging firefight. Virtually every reliable report says he simply deserted his post, walked off toward Pakistan, and was picked up some time later. That alone is enough to refute the "honor and distinction" claim - but it gets worse. From Fox News:
"A senior official confirms to Fox News that the conduct of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl -- both in his final stretch of active duty in Afghanistan and then, too, during his time when he lived among the Taliban -- has been thoroughly investigated by the U.S. intelligence community and is the subject of "a major classified file." In conveying as much, the Defense Department source confirmed to Fox News that many within the intelligence community harbor serious outstanding concerns not only that Bergdahl may have been a deserter but that he may have been an active collaborator with the enemy. ...Although this source had not seen the classified file described by the Pentagon source, the counterterrorism official agreed that given the high priority attached to the Bergdahl case over the last five years, the need for clarity about Bergdahl's actions before and during his time with the Taliban "would have been a high priority for intelligence tasking."Obviously, someone within the military intelligence community suspected that Bergdahl's service left an awful lot to be desired. Even if Bergdahl's loyalties were investigated, and that investigation showed he was not collaborating with enemy forces, he still deserted his unit. That desertion led to the deaths of six Americans who were searching for him. Is this Susan Rice's definition of "honor and distinction?" Rice has a well-established history of spouting administration lies on the Sunday shows. If there's a name for that job, it should be at the top of her resume. Here's the problem, though. Susan Rice is President Obama's national security adviser. Does the administration honestly expect us to believe that she was simply unaware that the man whose freedom just cost us 5 of the world's most dangerous terrorists was under investigation for desertion and possible collaboration with the enemy? Or - and this is far more likely - is it that they just don't give a damn what we believe. Be sure to "like" Robert Laurie over on Facebook and follow him on Twitter. You'll be glad you did.
