TORONTO, – B'nai Brith Canada has responded to comments by Liberal Senator Frank Mahovlich in the current Senate debate on the future of the Canadian Wheat Board by issuing a statement cautioning against the use of Holocaust trivialization to score political points.
"Likening current government policy to the practices of the Nazi regime is an unacceptable abuse of Holocaust terminology," stated Frank Dimant, CEO of B'nai Brith Canada. "Invoking Adolph Hitler in this fashion suggests a shocking lack of sensitivity to what rule by Hitler meant to millions of vulnerable people in Europe in the World War II era.
"It is disrespectful to those who were murdered by the Nazis, as well as to those who laid down their lives to defeat Hitler and his murderous regime.
"We call on all public figures to exercise restraint in how they debate their political differences and to refrain from resorting to Holocaust trivialization to make their case."
