Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor: What the SCOTUS needs is more diversity on the bench

We don't want to upset anyone, but the secret is out and we feel duty-bound to report it. President Obama's gun-grabbing Supreme Court pick, Merrick Garland, is a white guy. He's also Jewish. ...And he's an "Ivy-leaguer." That's apparently a problem for another Supreme Court leftist, Justice Sonia Sotomayor. She's bemoaning the Supreme Court's lack of diversity because, as she puts it, "different backgrounds help justices understand issues differently based on their experience."

“I, for one, do think there is a disadvantage from having (five) Catholics, three Jews, everyone from an Ivy League school,” Sotomayor said during a talk at Brooklyn Law School, adding that several of the justices are from New York City and none of them have a background in criminal defense law outside of white-collar crime, the Associated Press reported. Sotomayor said varied backgrounds help justices to consider and understand issues differently, based on their experience. “A different perspective can permit you to more fully understand the arguments that are before you and help you articulate your position in a way that everyone will understand,” she said. Sotomayor did not mention Garland, a white man of Jewish faith who graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, but some have criticized the nominee’s selection as insufficiently diverse. Obama has defended his appointment of Garland, highlighting his experience and talent.

Pssst. Here's a pro-tip. When a left-wing rag like Time uses the phrase "some" - as in "some have criticized" - it's basically a synonym for "we." More importantly, diversity shouldn't really matter in terms of a SCOTUS pick. What should matter is that the person being nominated is a strict adherent to the original constitutional intent of the framers. "Backgrounds" are irrelevant, as is race. If you're black, white, orange, blue, purple, whatever, we're all good - as long as you're capable of correctly applying constitutional principles to the cases you're hearing. Justices aren't supposed to be basing decisions on race, religion, and background. In fact, it's just the opposite. They're supposed to be determining constitutionality independently of all these things. If we're going to start applying a check-the-box standard to SCOTUS picks, we doom the very concept of all men being equal in the eyes of the law.
