Surge in Hate Based Vandalism

Toronto – Following hotline reports of an overnight crime spree of vandalism including swastikas painted on cars parked in front of homes in one residential area of Thornhill, B'nai Brith Canada is urging all residents to report any information they may have as soon as possible in order to assist the police in solving these latest incidents of hate.

“These incidents are just the latest of what appears to be an upsurge in hate based vandalism that we have documented in the past few weeks ” said Frank Dimant, CEO, B’nai Brith Canada. “The ongoing hate based graffiti in Winnipeg, the threatening messaging scrowled on to Jewish homes in Toronto, the swastika carved into the grounds of the Richmond Hill Golf Club -- they are all examples of how this hate symbol continues to find its victims. Nine years ago numerous homes in Thornhill were defaced with swastikas and other messages of hate. Those hate crimes have not been solved to this day and no perpetrators identified. With the help of the public, this does not have to be the case in this latest series of incidents. “We have been in close contact with the York Regional Police who continue to canvass the area in search of evidence. Anyone who has been a victim of vandalism or has additional information about these incidents is being asked to report them to Police and to our Anti-Hate Hotline.”
