11th Annual Teddies Awards

Taxpayers Federation to Announce Waste Awards

OTTAWA: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) will host its 11th annual ‘Teddies Waste Awards’ black tie ceremony in the Charles Lynch Press Theatre on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Wednesday, 11 March 2009, at 10:30 a.m. Like last year, the announcement will last between 8 and 10 minutes.

This year’s host again will be CTF Federal Director, Kevin Gaudet. He will be joined by Porky the Waste Hater (CTF’s tuxedo-wearing pig mascot), and the Samantha - a veteran government waste awards hostess. The waste awards are bronze-gilded pig statuettes awarded in four categories; municipal waste, provincial waste, federal waste and lifetime achievement. This year there are 13 nominees in the four categories. Last year’s winners were: Municipal Waste: Former Toronto Catholic District School Board Trustee, Christine Nunziata, for expense account abuse including expensing lingerie. Provincial Waste: Quebec’s former Lieutenant Governor, Lise Thibeault, for lavish spending, including an $825 suite at the Ritz Carlton. Federal Waste: Senator Raymond Lavigne for having a staffer cut down trees on his neighbour’s lawn. Lifetime Achievement: The Canadian Tax Code for 2,226 pages of complexity
