A former headmaster and geography teacher inspired famous British comedian and TV presenter Michael Palin to become a traveller, according to the celebrity during the unveiling of his teacher’s portrait.

The late John Hall taught a young Michael Palin at Birkdale School in Sheffield and Mr Hall’s family commissioned Yorkshire painter Steven Lingham to produce the portrait in memory of him. “I remember Mr Hall’s geography lessons well; all those dots on a map started me off on my travels,” revealed Mr Palin, who enjoyed geography field trips to the Rivelin Valley, Forge Dam and beyond in his youth. He then gave candid highlights of his travelling career across the globe and the many remote places he has visited, giving everyone a first class evening of both nostalgic reflection and entertainment. The artist Steven Lingham adds: “I do offer a portrait painting service in addition to my wildlife because I like to stretch my abilities and show the world that I can paint anything that I set my mind to do. I am really proud to have been asked to produce this portrait and delighted to know that it hangs in pride of place in the school.” Mr Hall was headmaster at Birkdale from 1963 to 1983 but prior to being appointed headmaster, he was a geography teacher. The oil on panel painting measures 17 x 13 inches and hangs in the reception at Birkdale School. www.stevenlingham.com
