The Coup in Venezuela: the Outcome of Failed a Socialist State(Editor’s Note: CFP columnist Dennis Jamison, who is in Ecuador, says there are interesting American mainstream media-ignored events unfolding there: “I wrote this article to help the folks up North understand better understand what is really going on there.") Ecuador-This past Wednesday in Venezuela the head of the National Assembly, Vice President Juan Guaidó, proclaimed himself to be the new president of his nation. This sparked a serious response from many governments of the world, most taking sides with the new president, or newly “elected” one, Nicolás Maduro. And, the unfortunate circumstance in this international incident is that the average citizen in the United States was not aware of the reality. This is not because it is not news, it is because the mainstream media in the U.S. seem to not consider it news of significance, which in and of itself, is another reason why the MSM is considered untrustworthy by an increasing number of average citizens.
Yet, that bastion of trustworthy news sources, The New York Times, called for as much as a coup in Venezuela last year. In June of 2018, The New York Times Editorial Board published an article formulating the question of “how to get rid of Mr. Maduro before he completes the destruction of his country.” Several news sources picked up the story and reiterated the question a short time later. The NYT Editorial Board article was clear about the dire reality of the Venezuelan people, which has been observed for a considerable period of time from many quarters around the world. The MSM may not want to tread too heavily into the current state of affairs as it is a more hopeful culmination of a failed Socialist or Communist state. The NYT Editorial Board article, entitled, “Venezuela’s Sham Election,” did not attempt to provide a Left-slanted spin, but dealt honestly with the failures of Hugo Chavez, the mentor of Maduro. The article pointed out that in the last four years, Bloomberg had looked at Maduro’s regime and ranked his nation as the world’s most miserable economy, which had shrunk by more than 30 percent. Also, the article reiterated that the International Monetary Fund had reported that Venezuela’s economy had ballooned to 13,000 percent inflation in 2018 The exodus from the Communist-run state has been tragic. In November of 2018, it was reported by the United Nations Refugee Agency that the number of refugees fleeing from the hyperinflation, serious shortages of food and medicine, and the escalating violence had reached three million people -- one of every twelve in the population! Observing the situation from Ecuador, one of the smallest countries in South America, a record influx of refugees has put a tremendous strain on this nation’s economy, as well as a strain on the social and political structures of this tiny nation. It is true as well for the other South American countries like Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Panama, and Peru. These nations have all done what they could to help the fleeing refugees, which is a true humanitarian concern, as opposed to an embellished one.

Bolivarian Diaspora

This crisis has reached such a serious proportion it is now being referred to as the “Bolivarian Diaspora.” which has been recognized by a number of observers as the largest recorded refugee crisis in the Americas. And, where is the MSM on this horrendous crisis? It is eerily similar to the failure of the MSM when they either refused to cover, or were too biased to cover the Holocaust occurring under another dictator named Adolf Hitler. While the MSM has not professionally, nor properly reported on the Bolivarian Diaspora, certain honest and dedicated journalists do deserve credit for reporting on this crisis as it was developing, though it was not widely reiterated by many news outlets. One of these journalists, Wil S. Hylton, writing for The New York Times Magazine, in March of 2018, wrote of the Venezuelan tragedy, which was two months before the national elections. He explained then that “the prospect of political change seems vanishingly slender: As the country spirals down, President Nicolas Maduro is tightening his grip on power, invalidating opposition parties and forcing political rivals into exile and prison.” Upon the basis of a one-person election, President Maduro was re-”elected” in May of 2018, and a majority of the thinking people in Venezuela apparently believed that policy changes would not be possible and their country would continue to deteriorate and the rate of refugee flight increased. The crisis was only seen to be prolonged under the repressive efforts of Maduro, which was a continuation of the “Bolivarian Revolution” under Hugo Chavez. The failed Socialist policies, which often entail cultural and political hegemony over an entire population - like in North Korea, or Communist China today. The Venezuelan government had denied the people any migratory status, and insisted that the United Nations and the United States government were attempting to manifest some foreign intervention in the affairs of Venezuela.

The “Bolivarian Revolution” and the socialist ideology as its foundation created this humanitarian crisis due to the repressive efforts of Chavez and Maduro

The mentality justifying total control over human beings is quite frightening, yet it has been shared by those of a dictatorial or a tyrannical mindset throughout human history. Such thought led to tyranny, whether it originated from pharohs, kings, emperors, or even the so-called “banana republic” dictators from Latin America. The sad reality is that once upon a time in the South, a brave Spanish Criollo (born in the New World”) rose up to become El Libertador, and helped to free his people from such tyrannical control. That man was Simon Bolivar from Venezuela. The extreme irony of the collapse of the Socialist/Communist state of Venezuela is that the nations where the refugees are now fleeing to receive sanctuary, are the nations that Bolivar freed from the grip of the Spanish monarchy. The “Bolivarian Revolution” and the socialist ideology as its foundation created this humanitarian crisis due to the repressive efforts of Chavez and Maduro. The Leftist-Trending U.S. mainstream media moguls have a difficult time providing proper coverage of the unfolding tragedy in Venezuela because it does not fit the narrative of how great a socialist utopia is supposed to be. The world is witnessing a horrendous human tragedy in our time, right within the Western Hemisphere, and the MSM is virtually silent, except for efforts that would fit into the contemporary anti-American narrative being spewed by several “media rock stars” who essentially are paid to promote the talking points of the “Democrat” Party. For proactive, thinking people, like those of Venezuela who have no illusions over the value of socialist-communist utopias, the instruction derived from this “man-made” tragedy should sink deeply into their minds. It is becoming increasingly clear that there is more than one coup in progress in the Western Hemisphere. A frightful thought would be the reality that the MSM may be aiding and abetting those who hate Freedom itself. Especially for American citizens, it must be remembered that the MSM does not just spew out the news; now, the greater tendency is to spew out views, or the omission of news.
