The Liberals – they don’t even pretend anymore

It has never been a secret that the Liberal Party of Canada is all about power. It is often said that the Liberals only have two core principles - they believe in God and they believe that God is a Liberal. And nobody is really sure about the first one.

The party’s entire reason for being is to gain power and once that is achieved is to hold onto it. If there was any ever doubt about this, that doubt vanished last Wednesday.           The Conservative government proposed changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act that would give the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration more broad discretionary powers. The backlog of applications for permanent residency status has ballooned to over the three quarters of a million mark. In order to streamline this processing, the legislative changes allow the Minister the discretion to fast track some applications while allowing others to be processed normally. This gives the government the power to insure that those immigrants who will provide the greatest economic benefit to Canada to have priority over family class members such as grandparents whose benefit to the country as a whole are limited if not nonexistent.           Racism cried the Liberals! The Liberals accused the government of wanting to cherry pick who gets in and who doesn’t.  What a novel idea. Accusations were made that the whole purpose of the amendments was to keep more Muslims from entering the country. Stephen Harper’s secret agenda that has been pretty well been dormant since the 2004 election campaign resurfaced. The Conservatives were accused of decimating Canada’s multiculturalism policy and of course, of being xenophobic. Shocking!           So you would naturally think that the Liberals; the party of immigrants; the party of tolerance and diversity, would vote to defeat this proposed legislation brought forward by this minority government. But they didn’t. After weeks of calling these proposals racist and xenophobic, part of some hidden agenda, they did what the Dion Liberals do best. They sat on their hands and allowed the changes to pass. Harper made these amendments part of the budget implementation bill so its defeat would be a matter of confidence and would have led to the defeat of the government and an election.  When it comes to a choice between the Liberals vision of Canada and power, they’ll take power every time. This has been the most blatant case of the Natural Governing Party selling whatever principles they have out in an attempt to gain power. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely and the loss of power corrupts even more.           On important matters, the Tories have a de facto majority government. The only opposition that they face in Parliament is from the NDP and the Bloc that do not have the numbers to defeat them. Until such time as the Liberals feel that they can win an election, they will continue to allow Conservative legislation to pass and their beloved special interest groups be damned. If the Libs will sell out immigrants, nothing is sacred. Part of what is happening now results from the Conservative government having brought in fixed election dates. While the opposition can always bring a minority government down and force an election before the next one is due, it is difficult for the government to dissolve Parliament before the next election date. Had it not been for fixed date elections, we may already have had one. Fixed election dates that prevent the government from calling an election just because it is favourable to them also results in the current situation where the Liberals rant and rave against what the Conservatives are doing and then sit back and allow them to do it.           The Liberals love to talk about welcoming immigrants and multiculturalism. It makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But they don’t really care about immigrants. If they did they would have defeated the government and fought the next election on the issue of immigration. The truth is that they don’t give a damn about immigrants, except to the extent that those immigrants will become Canadian citizens and vote Liberal.           The only minority that Stéphane Dion cares about is Stéphane Dion. He doesn’t want to become one – a leader of the Liberal Party of Canada who never gets to be prime minister.
