My Jewish friend is in favor of OWS. He doesn’t care that many of the protestors are anti-Semitic and that the mob would reapportion his money and perhaps rearrange his face. He is naïve. He loves his enemy, not even realizing that he is leading his enemy. He sides against himself without knowing it.
My friend doesn’t care that the mob is disturbing the lives of the community and that it is only concerned about its own view points. The mob discounts the lives and views of the Wall Streeters, plays bongos into the night, and has intercourse in Zucotti Park. They disrupt the neighborhood. They are not far from committing violence towards the businessmen who live there. Mobs develop their own angry logic. They are not far from chopping off heads like Robespierre’s crew.
The mob is a reversal of civilization. It is the erosion of discretion and proper behavior. It is time-machining our culture back to prehistoric times. It is the resurrection of Neanderthal culture.
The mob is protesting their lack of jobs while they are causing the city to spend a fortune on policing them. Thus, their gatherings cost the city money that could have been used for public jobs if it wasn’t wasted on extra sanitation and policing costs. These protests are counterproductive. The protestors don’t care. They want to hang out with their ilk in the park.
To be in favor of OWS is to be in favor of the fall of Rome. It is the degradation of civilization. It is chaos. It is the fall of propriety into a pond of selfish reapportionment of other people’s successes. It is self-centered and in truth disgusting. The right to protest is not the right to the wrong protest. Manner must be implicit and retained in the degrading demonstrations. Free speech is not the right to ignore the Golden Rule—Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Protest they name is narcissism.
How would the OWS crowd feel if we took down their addresses and sent a crowd to their homes to play drums into the night, defecate on their stoops and generally threaten them? A fair number of these youths live with their parents in the suburbs. I’m sure their parents wouldn’t like not being able to get their Cadillacs out of their Great Neck or Dix Hills driveways.
Perhaps that’s what the decent people should do. Camp out on the protestors front lawns. Oh, that’s right, then they wouldn’t be decent. They’d be like the creepy OWS crew. They’d be narcissists feeling that their voices were the only important voices in the world.
