The WNBA Is A National Embarrassment, Not A Sports League

I’ll save my viewing time for true athletes who understand professionalism and who respect and honor the country that allows for their privileged lifestyle;

I am one of those people who didn’t care about the WNBA at all until Caitlin Clark arrived. Still, even her presence isn’t enough to hold my attention, and I’m betting that I’m not the only one who feels this way.

WNBA: a circus with a clown named Cathy Engelbert as commissioner

The league, if you can even call it that, has spiraled down into a mire of its own making. It's become nothing more than a bad soap opera, and the storylines that emerge from this calamity have nothing to do with sports.

It’s become more than obvious that the Black players in this league are offended that Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham have garnered so much attention. Both are White heterosexual females, while many of the other members of this hideous play are not. This mix of envious and racially motivated hatred has resulted in many absolutely egregious fouls being committed against both Clark and Cunningham, and in far too many cases, no foul was called by the laughably inept and racist referees.

As if the favoritism shown to the black players, the rough fouls, and blatant incompetence of the referees weren’t enough, a transgender controversy manifested itself when Cunningham answered a simple question honestly.

I’m paraphrasing, but she basically said she didn’t believe men should play in a women's league. A purely rational statement, but as we all know, rational people and common sense are in short supply these days.

After that, Cunningham was booed every time she walked onto an opposing court. Her supporters began wearing T-shirts to show that support, which opened another can of worms. Arena officials either told them to remove the shirts or cover them. In some cases, officials escorted them out.

Not to be outdone, some prima donna players got into the act by verbally assaulting paying fans they saw wearing the shirts. Shouting matches with the crowd aren't conducive to fan growth.

In a real sports league, when the game was being mangled and tarnished so badly, the commissioner would step in and end the madness. But this is the WNBA: a circus with a clown named Cathy Engelbert as commissioner.

This league never learns from its mistakes

The heat got so intense over her refusal to end what was happening that she announced her retirement at the end of this season.

This league never learns from its mistakes. When the Indiana Fever, Clark and Cunningham’s team, was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, viewership dropped drastically. Still, articles continued to condemn them as though the league’s problems were all their fault.

We’re two games into the finals now, and once again the players on both teams from the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries are demonstrating their contempt for the league they play in and the country they live in. Before both games, the teams left before the National Anthem and returned seconds after it finished. They did this despite league rules requiring players, coaches, and trainers to stand and line up during the anthem.

What has happened to women's rights to free and fair competition? Sophie Cunningham did nothing but speak out for female athletes in middle schools, high schools, and colleges where they are forced to play alongside men who claim to be women. As for the rest of it, whether it's Angel Reese complaining about something or female sports writers complaining about Clark, they have convinced me to avoid this freak show like the plague.

This league is an embarrassment. There is nothing redeeming about it at all. Basketball is the sport that is supposedly being played, but the game itself is never what is discussed before, during, or after the games.

Hair extensions, nose rings, and walking out on the National Anthem are not what I tune in to see. I’ll save my viewing time for true athletes who understand professionalism and who respect and honor the country that allows for their privileged lifestyle.
