A historic building in the UK has inspired the work of two artists who are holding an exhibition this December.

Cutt Mill on the Stour at Hinton St Mary, near Sturminster Newton, Dorset continues to provide much material for artists Zara McQueen and Ann Wilson. “There are two very distinct sides to this building and that is what is truly inspiring,” says Zara. “A rich history and sense of extreme beauty are coupled with deep sadness. When the weather is warm it attracts local families who walk and fish; a reflection of timeless rural life.” Ann adds: “Zara and I met about four years ago and our work compliments each other very well. I think the reason for this is something to do with the atmospheric nature of our work and the common theme of environment. Cutt Mill is a place of contrasts. I'm inspired by the incredible natural beauty of the place, its peace, quiet, gentleness - even the mill in its decaying state has a peace about it. But hidden is a darkness and mystery. The man made mill belongs there in that space, which is what I guess I'm working with - creating a form that fits in the environment.” The exhibition, which features paintings by Zara McQueen and ceramics by Ann Wilson runs at The Arts Centre, Shaftesbury, Dorset from December 6 (preview night 5.30pm to 8.30pm) to December 11.
