Thousands march in Texas for ‘Police Lives Matter’

A few police officers got together to plan a march in honor of Harris County Deputy Darren Goforth who was gunned down execution-style while putting gas into his cruiser at a Houston gas station. The officers were hoping to get a few hundred people to join them. After news of their plans became public, a lot of people expressed their desire to join in the march and the venue had to be changed to a larger one; 4.5 miles of the Sam Houston Expressway.

On Saturday, September 12, a crowd estimated at 8,000 began gathering an hour and a half before the march was scheduled to begin. Speeches were made and then the walk began. It was a sea of blue after many light blue t-shirts were given out to those who attended. The shirts had “Police Lives Matter” on the front while the back read “United We Stand—Goforth with No Hate.” A lot of the marchers wore Captain America shirts. The slain deputy bought Captain America shirts so he and his son could wear them together. They never got the opportunity to do so until the day of the deputy’s funeral when the young boy wore his under his jacket and Goforth’s shirt was placed underneath his uniform. David Sherrod, a businessman who helped organize the march said, “Enough is enough. You aren’t going to execute cops in Houston. We won’t stand for it.”
