Prime Minister Tsvangirai survives fatal car crash, wife Susan dies

Zimbabwe’s Premier in the Government of National Unity, Morgan Tsvangirai survived a car accident that claimed the life of his wife Susan Friday afternoon. Sources in the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said Tsvangirai’s official Mercedes Benz collided head on with a lorry but said the Prime Minister was not seriously injured. The couple is reported to have been coming from their rural home In Buhera, south of the capital Harare. Reports indicate Tsvangirai was airlifted to a hospital at nearby Beatrice before being transferred to a private clinic, The Avenues Clinic, in the capital Harare. MDC spokesperson, Mr. Nelson Chamisa told Reuters news agency that the Prime Minister is in a stable condition. “We have just heard that there was an accident of sorts involving the president of the party. Injuries, yes, but not critical condition, we are still assessing the actual condition,” said Chamisa. Tsvangirai married Susan in 1978 and the couple has six children. The late Susan has not been in the media limelight but was involved in many activities to do with women’s rights and AIDS.
