Update On 'Lily White's' Uninvited Bellringer

This weekend the uninvited bellringer I wrote about returned, with a buddy. Friend and fellow community safety watcher 'Lily White' saw them on her porch from her security camera.

This time the return bellringer put his hands up to the glass of her front door and peered inside after ringing the doorbell.

Extremely sketchy behavior in my book. Less skeptical folks assume it was an innocent attempt to see if anyone was home.

Thankfully, her front door glass is covered from the inside, unlike other suburbanites who like having homes open to public view. Her background working in the security department of a federal contractor serves her well.

She contacted me and I advised calling the police- which she did.

After confirming this was done I visited to offer moral support and volunteer security if need be.

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) quickly arrived and responding officer gave her a description of the duo before she could share security camera footage.

He showed them across the street and reported checking credentials that identied them as employees of a national telecom company.

While not unfair toward law enforcement, I wondered aloud afterwards whether local police keep a database of credentials for wandering workers in this industry?

On his first visit the uninvited doorbell ringer was recorded wearing casual clothes and a backpack. Not quite a traditional work uniform.

I didn't want to break up a pleasant police/community interaction by asking tactical questions about whether he ran them for warrants?

Showing up unannounced twice at a single woman's home in a lurker-prone city bears investigation in my opinion.

The officer told us he warned them to be careful how they act on someone's property because they could pick "the wrong house" and be mistaken for burglars.

My thoughts exactly!

'Lily White' and I remain dubious about these young men's motives. That said, we use these encounters as dress rehearsals for threat assessment.

It's worth noting burglars and home invaders use phony or actual company credentials, reflective vests and uniforms to catch residents off guard.
