Weiner is confronted by a reporter from Britain's ITV. And he acts pretty weird in a loose cannon sort of way, almost as if he knows the jig is up and he figures, What the hell, might as well just beclown myself totally.
And yet I can't entirely find fault with him here. Watch:
Yeah, I know, you don't act that way. And yet here's why I must admit I can sort of see myself doing the same thing under similar circumstances. Her questions are kind of dopey. The "hunger for the big job"? Even if that really is his motivation (which I suspect), you don't think he's going to say that, do you? So what's the point of asking?
The question about his personal life? I get that you're trying to create a video product to air on your station, but do you really think he's going to say anything about that subject that he hasn't already said? Really? Not one question about crime. Not one question about taxes. Not one question about city services. Not one question about what the mayor's top priorities should be.
So sure, mock the accent, drop the Monty Python references, tell her flat out he's not taking her seriously. Generally act like a complete jerk. When you're Anthony Weiner, it's what you do.
I must admit, I'd have a hard time taking her seriously too when she asks questions like these. But having said that, he's earned it. There's nothing about his record or his candidacy that would suggest he should be taken seriously as the man to tackle any of this. So maybe if he doesn't like dopey questions, he shouldn't behave in such a dopey fashion.
I'm a little surprised he didn't ask for her number. She's kind of cute.
