VIDEO: Biden's heartfelt expression of love for his son on The Late Show

OK look, I get it. I'm no more a fan than you are - of either one of these guys, really. But I'm a dad before I'm anything else, which is why for the first time in all the years I've observed Joe Biden on the public stage, I watched this and knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was being real and genuine. And for all the things that are wrong with Joe Biden as a public official, as a politician, etc., you can't help but see the genuineness of his humanity when you watch this. And if you watch it and you start carp in the comments about how none of it matters because he's the enemy of whatever - dude, I can't help you:

God forbid I (or any of you for that matter) should ever go through what he's just gone through, let alone more than once. (Remember he lost his first wife and his daughter in the early '70s.) Politicians are fake and are always concerned about how they come across, and it's rare to see one offering anything genuine whatsoever. One of the reasons you can recognize it when it happens is that you see it so rarely - especially from any member of the Obama Administration. And that's why you can't miss it here. Look, I won't lie: I've been brutal at times toward Biden. When he turned the 2012 vice presidential debate with Paul Ryan into a Vaudeville act of smirking, eye-rolling and head-shaking, I wanted to go through the television and wring the man's neck. I still don't think he's the right person to serve in any capacity in government and I sure as hell don't want him to be president (although I do think he'd be better than Hillary, which is not saying much). But I can't really detest him after seeing this. By the way, I think you're also seeing further reason to believe that all the presidential talk where Biden is concerned is really about the Democratic Party's late-to-the-boat realization that Hillary is a disaster and they have to do something. Biden decided long ago that the presidential opportunity had passed him by and he was at peace with it, and he's only thinking about running now because his party is in a crisis with an "inevitable" nominee who demonstrates increasingly by the day that she's a trainwreck of a candidate. He might still do it, but it's obvious his heart's not in it and he would do it only as one feeling called to duty in an impossible situation. Like I said, he would be better than Hillary, but still a horrendous president. Even so, I'm no longer as convinced that he's such a horrendous guy.
