Jim McDermott is the guy who visited Iraq before the 2003 invastion to show solidarity with Saddam Hussein, so keep that in mind as you watch this.
The key here is the way he defines "subsidize". To McDermott, legally applying for status that relieves you of paying taxes the law says you do not have to pay amounts to the taxpayers "subsidizing" what you do, even though not a dollar actually comes from the taxpayers to support what you do. McDermott thinks the default ownership of all wealth is in the hands of the government, and anything the government deems to allow you to keep is its blessing on you - irrespective of the fact that you, not they, earned it.
And of course, the charge that they want no scrutiny at all is pure fiction and really a despicable charge. What they want is the same rules that apply to everyone else applying to them, no more, no less, and the very reason we have a scandal here is that this is not what happened.
Congressmen like McDermott helped to cause this problem by encouraging the IRS to do this kind of stuff, but I can't say it any better than John Eastman, chairman of the National Organization for Marriage:
