Now, if you've ever spent time in a school cafeteria - and ridiculously, I suppose we all have - you've heard so many absurd and idiotic things, you'd think just about anyone would be numb to it. But that's not how it's going to work in the age of Trump. It looks like any sort of expression that might be in line with our new president's thinking - however frivolous - will be treated as if the fall of humanity is imminent. Oh, and the police will be called:
One day after Republican candidate Donald Trump was elected president, some middle school students in Royal Oak chanted enthusiasm for one of his platform planks: the building of a wall between the United States and Mexico. The incident — a small group of students chanting "Build the wall!" — was captured on video and shared widely via Facebook, and took place during a lunch at Royal Oak Middle School. "This happened today at Royal Oak Middle School in Royal Oak, Michigan," wrote Dee Perez-Scott, who posted the video on Facebook. "It is so sad. Latino children were crying. The taunts, the 'Build that Wall' with such bullying power and hate from children to children. Just horrifying!"
The video has since gone viral, with more than 733,000 views. It has been shared more than 18,700 times as of Thursday morning. "We addressed this incident when it occurred. We are addressing it today," Royal Oak Schools superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin said in a statement. "We are working with our students to help them understand the impact of their words and actions on others in their school community," the statement continued. The News has contacted the district for more information on the nature of the district's response. A short video of the incident shows students in a section of the cafeteria making a chant, as a student at a different table records. The video lasted only seconds. Royal Oak Police Department has had a presence at the middle school since class opened Thursday morning, and will be there throughout the day, Lt. Keith Spencer said. "We are aware of the video and are monitoring comments on it as it gets shared," Spencer told The News.
Now my first question is why this requires any response from the school district at all. It's a bunch of kids chanting something in the cafeteria. If it was inappropriate, a lunch lady should come over and tell them to shut up. Incident over. That's how you handle it if you're a serious person. If you want to turn it into a cause celebre to justify clamping down on people's freedom of expression, then you call in the police and "work with students to help them understand the impact of their words" or whatever. By the way, if the left and the media ever told the truth about anything, everyone would know that the proposal to build a wall is not about anything but improving border security. It's not about hating Mexicans or anything like that. It's about making sure that if anyone comes into this country, they do so legally. And there is an accessible and legal way of doing so. It's just that running across the border and bypassing the process is not it, and the wall is designed to stop people from doing that. If those students intended to insult Latinos (and who knows if they did or not?), and they think "build that wall" is a way of expressing that, then they're poorly informed about why the building of a wall is being discussed. And that's not the fault of Donald Trump. It's the fault of the people who have brazenly lied about what Trump wants to do and why.
