McCarrick Laicization a Political Bone Throw?

Viganò: Rome Has No "Genuine Willingness" to Stop Clerical Sex Abuse

McCarrick LaicizationArchbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the former Apostolic Nuncio to the United states, has publicly expressed his misgivings about the upcoming Vatican summit on clerical sexual-abuse this February 21-25. In a brief essay issued in response to an invitation to participate in a National Catholic Register symposium on the upcoming summit, he says, "I am praying intensely for the success of the February summit" but laments that there is "no sign of a genuine willingness to attend to the real causes of the present situation." Viganò presents three critical questions, wherein he manifests his doubt over the likelihood of success at the summit.

Homosexual activity among the clergy--is being hushed by Rome

First, he asks, "Why will the meeting focus exclusively on the abuse of minors?" Acknowledging that crimes against minors are "the most horrific," he nonetheless points out that "the crises in the United States and Chile that have largely precipitated the upcoming summit have to do with abuses committed against young [male] adults, including seminarians, not only against minors." Unfortunately, this clerical abuse against priests, young adults, and seminarians is what is spawning the abuse of minors. The archbishop laments that "Almost nothing has been said about sexual misconduct with adults, which is itself a grave abuse of pastoral authority." What the archbishop is pointing out is that the real cause of the sex-abuse crisis--the homosexual activity among the clergy--is being hushed by Rome. On this issue of homosexuality, Viganò asks why the word "homosexuality" never appears in official Vatican documents anymore. While acknowledging that not all priests with homosexual inclinations are abusers, he points out that "the overwhelming majority of abuse has been inflicted on post-pubescent boys by homosexual clerics." Homosexuality indeed is the tumor that is spreading the sexual-abuse cancer in the Church. Viganò says that any attempt to address the need for "spiritual revitalization" among the clergy will fail if this issue of homosexuality continues to be ignored. Finally, Viganò asks, "Why does Pope Francis keep and even call as his close collaborators people who are notorious homosexuals? Why has he refused to answer legitimate and sincere questions about these appointments? In doing so he has lost credibility on his real will to reform the Curia and fight the corruption."

Indeed, he has lost souls for Christ, some of whom could be eternally banished because of his appointments, though it is hoped that Christ will have mercy on many of these misguided souls. But will Christ have the same mercy on His representatives in the hierarchy who pervert souls in the name of "mercy?" Rome indeed shows no "genuine willingness" to fight clerical sexual abuse, despite the recent "laicization" of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who for decades has covered up the abuse of at least 1,000 victims perpetrated by some 300 priests under his jurisdiction. It appears that the defrocking of McCarrick was only a political maneuver to placate outraged Catholics before the summit and to help set the stage for it, since the Vatican statement against McCarrick says nothing of his homosexual life and aspirations, which is the very crux of the issue--the cause of the abuse. There are growing fears that the summit will be used to excuse homosexuality under the guise of "pastoral care." In Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò's explosive 11-page testimony of August 22, 2018, he alleged that Cardinal McCarrick, acting as the pope's "trusted counselor" helped in key appointments in the United States, including that of gay-advocate Cardinal Cupich, whom Francis has tasked with organizing the Vatican summit on clerical sex-abuse. With homosexual collaborators like Cupich on the board, what can we expect for the summit? If Francis was truly concerned about the abuse of minors, he would fire many of his "close collaborators" and pay heed to those faithful Catholics throughout the Church who have called for his amendment. We pray that he makes an about face and repatriates himself to Christ and His Church, remembering the scriptural warning to religious leaders who neglect their duties. "Because being ministers of his kingdom, you have not judged rightly, nor kept the law of justice, nor walked according to the will of God. Horribly and speedily will he appear to you: for a most severe judgment shall be for them that bear rule." (Wisdom 6:4-6)
