Vision from Martin Luther King, Jr. as Democrats Still Resist Voting Rights

In reflecting upon the celebration of the value of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in 2020, and all kinds of people do, a serious examination of history would help citizens to be clear about the dangers to voting rights in this millennium. It may also prove helpful in dispelling much confusion about the political accountability for suppression of the vote by the “Democratic” Party in the Deep South and throughout the United States today.

In 1957, not many Americans had really heard of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. He had made regional waves late in 1955 with the now famous Montgomery Bus Boycott that lasted a full year until December of 1956. He emerged as a leader during this boycott to end discrimination against blacks on the public buses in Montgomery, Alabama. Yet on May 17, 1957, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. travelled to Washington, D.C. to give an important speech at the Lincoln Memorial. In 1957 - years before his “I have a Dream” speech as part of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1957 was not to 250,000 people as would happen in 1963. King’s speech at the Lincoln Memorial in 1957 was for the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom. He addressed 25,000 civil-rights activists about voting rights for the oppressed black population in the Democrat-controlled Deep South. King was speaking clearly about having the right to vote and the open resistance from southern Democrats to the implementation of the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education ruling. One of his well articulated points was that “The denial of this sacred right is a tragic betrayal of the highest mandates of our democratic tradition. And so our most urgent request to the president of the United States and every member of Congress is to give us the right to vote.” He went on to emphatically state:

Give us the ballot, and we will no longer have to worry the federal government about our basic rights. Give us the ballot, and we will no longer plead to the federal government for passage of an anti-lynching law; we will by the power of our vote write the law on the statute books of the South and bring an end to the dastardly acts of the hooded perpetrators of violence. Give us the ballot, and we will transform the salient misdeeds of bloodthirsty mobs into the calculated good deeds of orderly citizens. Give us the ballot, and we will fill our legislative halls with men of goodwill and send to the sacred halls of Congress men who will not sign a ‘Southern Manifesto’ because of their devotion to the manifesto of justice. Give us the ballot, and we will place judges on the benches of the South who will do justly and love mercy, and we will place at the head of the southern states governors who will, who have felt not only the tang of the human, but the glow of the Divine.

Six months later in November, 17, 1957, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a powerful sermon that he had given numerous times before, but fortunately on this occasion, it was recorded for the sake of history. The sermon he delivered on that day at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church was titled, "Loving Your Enemies." It was a very profound sermon, and King spoke eloquently about love. Yet, he said some things that were very frightening regarding hate:

There’s another reason why you should love your enemies, and that is because hate distorts the personality of the hater. We usually think of what hate does for the individual hated or the individuals hated or the groups hated. But it is even more tragic, it is even more ruinous and injurious to the individual who hates. You just begin hating somebody, and you will begin to do irrational things. You can’t see straight when you hate. You can’t walk straight when you hate. You can’t stand upright. Your vision is distorted. There is nothing more tragic than to see an individual whose heart is filled with hate. He comes to the point that he becomes a pathological case. For the person who hates, you can stand up and see a person and that person can be beautiful, and you will call them ugly. For the person who hates, the beautiful becomes ugly and the ugly becomes beautiful. For the person who hates, the good becomes bad and the bad becomes good. For the person who hates, the true becomes false and the false becomes true. That’s what hate does. You can’t see right. The symbol of objectivity is lost. Hate destroys the very structure of the personality of the hater.

How are the realities of the civil rights speech related to the Christian sermon? The truth is simple. Although there are two major political parties in America at present, The anger, hatred, and resentment is originating from one side of the political arena these days. Americans are witnessing a mental meltdown of the “Democratic” Party, and the words of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. still ring true. Hatred of Donald Trump and the Americans with conservative principles and Judeo-Christian values are the ones hated today. Just as in the days of the Democrat oppression of the black citizens in the Deep South and states of the old Confederacy, American citizens are the objects of disdain, hatred and intolerance. And, the perpetrators either cannot see it, or they do not care about how their own behavior demeans them. It is clear that Republican laders are far from perfect, but the greatest anger, bitterness, and unchecked disrespect originates from the leaders of the Democrat Party. And, for those who can grasp it, the same hatred manifested against Rev. King and those disenfranchised blacks of the post-Reconstruction South is being directed at Trump and those who are disenfranchised among the Christian, conservative, and patriot population. The same political party that oppressed the black vote in the post-Reconstruction South is now suppressing the vote of Christian, faith-filled, conservatives and patriots in the 2000s. The same government security machinations behind the real surveillance of private citizen Rev. King, are at the core of the surveillance of candidate Donald Trump. People may arise in protest to such a revelation since it was Democrat Lyndon Baines Johnson who ushered in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Yet, it was also Johnson who orchestrated the famous “Johnson Amendment” to the Internal Revenue Service Code that has been used to hinder or harm religious and conservative organizations during Democrat Administrations. And, it must be remembered that it was not Johnson who initiated the civil rights efforts via his political party; it was Harry Truman who bucked his party and desegregated the United States Military in 1947. Harry Truman survived his own party turning on him despite his own “Emancipation Proclamation” in the desegregation of the United States Military. At the time, most of the pollsters and political pundits did not give Truman a chance of being elected in 1948. But he was.

Let us be real clear: the party of Truman and Kennedy is not the same “Democratic” Party. It is likely that Truman and Kennedy were political aberrations because from the days of Woodrow Wilson, the Democrats were manipulating the public mindset over the U.S. entry into World War I. There were active socialists in Wilson’s administration as well as Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s administration. History documents the validity of these points. Why is all this important in 2020? The reality is simple. Although it seems absurd today to believe that one political party would stoop to such lengths to get their designated candidates elected to office, but it is true. And both parties cheat. That is because Americans cheat! The American public has been quite naive about the nefarious factions behind the scenes in our nation’s electoral process. It isn’t even about getting the ballot anymore, as Rev. King said in 1957. Democrats have been able to show that the appearance of voting occurs orderly and properly while still being able to manipulate the outcome. If this is doubted, check out the numbers of lawsuits over voter fraud throughout the various states across the nation. The “Democratic” Party has been successful in controlling or manipulating the outcome of elections since the days of Andrew Jackson. They are quite adept, and if this is doubted, how is it that Americans are watching one state after another turn blue? The Blue Wave swept most of the Republicans out of office in the beautiful “Golden State” in 2018. The Blue Wave effectively swept out the GOP resistance in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and in Virginia just last year. They are coming after the rest of the “Red States” s well, But the most insidious effort, which effectively removes the vote of the less densely populated states is the effort to get rid of the Electoral College. The “Democratic” Party is a piece of work. It is all but democratic in nature. Its own history shows that they have perfected the manner of providing the appearance of an election, but have manipulated the outcome. They seem quite determined to move from the regional dominion they had in the Deep South for centuries -- long before Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. The hatred emanating from Democrat Party leaders is not just for Donald Trump or his supporters, it is a hatred for the United States of America as a Constitutional Republic. So in 2020, let’s see if we can keep it!
