We cannot allow our nation to go the way of the UK. It’s time to stop being passive and actively and unabashedly further the relevant teachings of Jesus in the public square

A 2025 Pew Poll report on religious trends provided shocking numbers about radical secularism in the United Kingdom (UK). Today, more British (46%) now claim no religion as do those who claim Christianity (43%). This report showed the UK was unique among nations in such an overwhelming turn from the nation’s religion. In recent years around a third of the UK has abandoned Christianity. The report found that 57% of those now claiming “no religion” were raised as Christians. (Pew Research)
The Chief Executive of “Humanists UK” lauded the findings of this report as a seeming victory over Christianity: “Today’s stats….. show the large population who don’t believe in gods today feel much less tied to the religious label of their family, school, or community.” (Humanists.UK, March 26, 2025)
This turn from Christianity to radical secularism in the UK has torn the fabric of British society and culture, in addition to the personal cost in salvation and peace. American Christians, would be wise to take note of the consequences of unbiblical passivity.
Anti-Christian discrimination within the UK has become substantial as it has secularized. A report by the Christian group “Voice for Justice UK” provided hard data about extent of the problem: 56% of UK Christians “experienced hostility and ridicule if they discussed their religious beliefs (61% in the younger age group). More than half of under 35s felt there were negative stereotypes of Christians at their place of work. 38% of Christians under 35 felt their freedom of speech was restricted.” Lynda Rose, the director of Voice for Justice UK, said: “Christianity lies at the foundation of British society, underpinning our tolerance and acceptance of diversity. But our survey shows Christians in the UK, both in the workplace and socially, are increasingly subjected to discrimination and marginalisation. Society has fallen victim to an ideology actively hostile to Christianity.” (Catholic Herald, June 11, 2024)
Correlating with the demise of Christianity in the UK is the dark societal and cultural consequences. The level of national pride among the British has plummeted in the past twenty years along with Christian faith, with a collapse among the younger age group (18-30). In 2004, 80% of the younger age group felt proud to be British, yet by 2024 that percent dropped by half to 41.
More disturbing, in 2004, 58% considered the UK a united country, yet by 2024 only 15% felt the same. Despite all the efforts the UK has made with DEI type initiatives in recent years, the number of young who believed the UK to be intolerant, racist, and “stuck in the past” has skyrocketed. (YouGov, Feb 21, 2025)
In addition to multiple polls showing British concerns over national unity and potential civil war, many Muslims in the UK have openly advocated for and support Sharia (Islamic) law in the UK replacing UK common law founded upon Judeo-Christian based common law. Almost a decade ago, around half of British Muslims supported moving the UK to Islamic law. (Policy Exchange, December 2016)
Since then, the number of British Muslims has grown exponentially, with growing support for moving from the Judeo-Christian based British Common Law system to Sharia. About a third of the UK now believes Civil War is “very” or “somewhat” likely within the next ten years. YouGov, Aug. 6, 2024)
A primary reason Christianity was marginalized and in the UK was due to passiveness of Christians in the cultural and political spheres. Despite the Church of England being the national established Church headed by a Christian monarchy, Christians generally receded from public life after World War II. Many were cowed by the same types of demands we have seen throughout the West this past half century: Christians cowed into keeping their religion out of the public sphere. Many Christians have obliged the secularists and kept a discreet profile. This allowed secularism to become the de facto religion in charge of the public square. As UK political leaders have pushed agendas in direct contravention to Christianity, like abortion, pornography, gay marriage, etc., many Christian leaders have held they must quietly submit to the government regardless of clear violation of scripture.
In America, non-Christians seeking to solidify the secular hold on the public square have been on the offensive to keep Christianity down. The term “Christian Nationalism” has become and ubiquitous cry and a stigma on par with “racism”. In most cases, those accusing others of Christian nationalism don’t define the term, so with the ambiguity Christians suppress their beliefs. In some cases, Liberal reporters have attempted to define Christian nationalism as the belief the our rights come from our creator (Fox News, February 28, 2024)
Of course, this would make the Declaration of Independence Christian nationalism.
Christians are commanded to act as “salt and light” in the world, including within the political and cultural world. That includes encouraging fellow citizens to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ relevant to public life and furthering a Christian culture. Romans 13:1-2 commands us to submit to government, but Romans 13:3-4 is clear that government must punish what is evil and praise what is good to keep authority. American independence came when King George III lost that authority with Christian Americans.
We cannot allow our nation to go the way of the UK. It’s time to stop being passive and actively and unabashedly further the relevant teachings of Jesus in the public square. To remain a majority Christian nation and the blessings that brings from God.
