Where is America’s next Abraham Lincoln?

Where is America’s next Abraham Lincoln?
“On June 16, 1858, more than 1,000 delegates met in the Springfield, Illinois, statehouse for the Republican State Convention. At 5:00 p.m. they chose Abraham Lincoln as their candidate for the U.S. Senate, running against Democrat Stephen A. Douglas.”

In 2024, America will re-unite. Or, it will further decline. In 2016, the nation wanted Presidential candor and got it from Trump. His style triggered a partisan rancor from half the population, most academics, all the federal bureaucracies, many high-tech industries, most media outlets, as well as virtually all Democrat pols, plus several pols in Trump’s own Party. The barrage of hatred was aimed to destroy a perceived interloper into national politics.

A house divided against itself cannot stand

It worked. A beehive of vitriol buzzed inside the Beltway and in the five affluent counties surrounding the District of Columbia. The high level of Trump-hatred continued, even after Biden’s inauguration. Biden was packaged as a “uniter”. A leader that would bring the nation together. That didn’t work. America wanted union but got more division with Joe. Today, the nation needs wisdom. Every bit as badly as it was needed in the 1860s. Nearly 168 years ago, a wise man once spoke as a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. The title of his speech was "A house divided against itself cannot stand". It was based on a biblical concept likely familiar to his audience. Among his words were these:

Lincoln knew there was a reckoning ahead based on the increasingly acrimonious division within America

“If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could then better judge what to do, and how to do it. We are now far into the fifth year, since a policy was initiated, with the avowed object, and confident promise, of putting an end to slavery agitation. Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only, not ceased, but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease, until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed. ‘A house divided against itself cannot stand.’ I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved -- I do not expect the house to fall -- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other.”
Lincoln knew there was a reckoning ahead based on the increasingly acrimonious division within America. He was not afraid to face it. If there is another Lincoln ahead, we will know him or her by their words. Let’s hope they sound something like Lincoln’s:

Our civil laws, at all levels of governments, are increasingly violated with impunity

We know where we’re trending as a nation. And the trend is not good. We’re moving toward national bankruptcy led by a federal government with an unsatiable appetite for spending money it doesn’t have. Our civil laws, at all levels of governments, are increasingly violated with impunity. And the civility of our society is increasingly fractured by lawlessness. Meanwhile, under the continuing recurrence of failed federal government programs and policies, the Peoples’ disaffection with government is continuously augmented. This disaffection will surface, with a vengeance, when a crisis is reached. In 1861, that crisis was a terrible American Civil War that led to the deaths of, at least, 600,000 Americans, on hundreds of battlefields. As was true then, is true now. The near-and-present danger to America does not come from any one or more nations outside our borders, but from within, from among us. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “I do not expect the Union to be dissolved nor its house to fall, but it will eventually cease to be divided. And it will become all one thing, or all another.”
Because what was true in Lincoln’s day remains true: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
