Santa Monica, Calif., – “Dronies” – a new trend where flying drones are used to shoot personal video “selfies” – has taken off over New Zealand’s holiday resorts, enabling visitors from around the world to share the epic beauty and experiences of their South Island holiday.

With the help of the Tourism New Zealand-sponsored travelling drone, visitors at six South Island destinations have the opportunity to star in an eight-second video. The drone records a close-up portrait of the travellers and then pans out to show the surrounding scene, leaving people with a vacation memory that can be shared via social media with family and friends. The hashtag #NZdronie has been created. NZdronie, which started last month, will travel around New Zealand’s South Island throughout August. As it’s currently winter in New Zealand, NZdronie is hitting the slopes at Coronet Peak, Cardrona, Mount Hutt and Mount Cook ski areas. It will also take a few flies around Queenstown, Wanaka, Canterbury and Lake Tekapo. As the season changes, it will also be used in other areas around the country. New Zealand is the first country to launch the new NZdronie service for consumers. Here is a link to a video demonstrating how NZdronie works: For details on where the NZdronie can be found, check out the 100% Pure New Zealand Facebook page.
