Why would a general carry a rifle in the first place?

It's a very serious offence for a soldier to accidentally fire his rifle, especially in the presence of his commanding officer.
What puzzles me is why a general would be carrying a rifle in the first place? I never saw a military officer with a rifle, I've only known them to wear side-arms (pistols.) William Bedford
