ABC News president Ben Sherwood, speaking at the Television Critics Association Winter press tour on Monday, addressed a variety of topics including his plans for Katie Couric, who is a contributor to ABC News.
Sherwood said that they would be “showcasing her all over the place,” but made it clear that she would not be a substitute for Diane Sawyer at “ABC World News.” Couric will be busy with the launch of her own daytime talk show in the fall, but still, Sherwood’s statement has to hurt the former CBS Evening News anchor. But Sherwood isn’t about to take any chances with Couric in the anchor chair after her five-year run at CBS, which not only didn’t lift the program from third place, but on more than one occasion set new ratings lows. And with CBS nipping at ABC’s heels in the ratings, it’s probably a smart move.
