Auckland Harbour Bridge Transformed by Lights

Auckland’s iconic harbour bridge has been brought to life in a world-first battery and peer-to-peer powered light show. The six-minute specially-composed light show sequence wowed crowds in New Zealand’s largest city watching and listening from different vantage points throughout the city on January 27, 2018. The bridge, which connects central Auckland and the suburbs of the North Shore lit up the Waitemata Harbour creating an audio-visual spectacle

The light show featured original music, including the rumbling of Polynesian drumming, and spectacular lighting effects, vividly demonstrating the new lighting capabilities and a smarter way to power Auckland. The event coincided with Auckland Anniversary weekend and will be lit up again this week as part of Waitangi celebrations. Waitangi Day is New Zealand’s national day and celebrates the signing of the founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi on February 6, 1840. The Auckland Harbour Bridge will put on an audio-visual display of stunning Maori imagery and sounds throughout the weekend to mark this occasion. The spectacular show uses groundbreaking renewable energy technology – stored through 630 solar panels – to light the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Each of the 90,000 LED lights added to the bridge can be individually programmed, allowing for an almost infinite array of designs and effects. The eight-lane, 58-year-old motorway bridge will be used to further enhance and celebrate Auckland’s major events and becoming an attraction for local residents and visitors.
