No, in case you're wondering, I haven't taken a monastic vow of poverty.
If anything, I've vowed that money or lack thereof shouldn't disqualify a worthwhile person from getting the time of day or even a volunteer safety escort from me.
Wealthy corporate CEOs, celebrities and politicians can afford arguably the best protectors out there.
My concern has always been for working class women by themselves, seniors navigating physical challenges and physical threats, children playing without supervision or worthy causes, who is their backup?
I don't see the shades and ear piece crowd close protecting these VIPs, which is where a Brother like me in t-shirt and jeans comes in when requested.
As a volunteer safety escort, I've stood watch while female friends got gas, checked a PO BOX, inspected a home for sale, did deliveries for an app, unloaded groceries at night or even walked her dog in an instance of a friend who was understandably nervous after being attacked.
While it's me doing it alone, my informal Borrow A Brother Coalition if you will, is a group of folks who don't look alike, might not vote alike, but like people enough to share concern and ideas on how to make everyone safer.
Not a bad reason to coalesce, if you ask me.
Take care of each other.
Be somebody's backup, within your comfort zone and the law.
