Scorching heat during the day gave way to ominous thunderstorms, causing police to direct the hundreds of protesters and media to scramble for safety beneath the Interstate-95 overpass. A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the National Weather Service just before 7 p.m., alerting the region to hail the size of ping-pong balls and 60 m.p.h. winds with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and causing cellphones and televisions to screech with alerts.
